Back from Brighton

Cliched though it is there was something quite fin de siecle about this year’s Labour Conference.  The idea of loss, the thought that the British people can and will probably now reject a party that has achieved a good deal, and handled the world’s worst financial crisis with a quiet calm.

It is so strange weaving in and out of contacts and people you know well at parties and get-togethers, still jocular and passionate like it was 1997. But then dropping out of the Conference centre late in the afternoon and seeing that amazing burning sunset over the sea.  There were many of us that paused at that I think, and sat for a moment with the reality of the situation.
